Fun with Facepaint

Mr. John and I took the kids to the Paso Robles Festival of the Arts this weekend.  What a feast for the senses!  There was so much beautiful art on display: artists creating right before our eyes, endless art projects for the kids in different mediums, a band performing at this corner of the park, an impossibly tall praying mantis-man, a group of children dancing and doing sign language on stage, and works being created on easels under the big oak tree.  All that creativity and energy in one place was amazing to behold!

We didn't wait for the festival to get our faces painted.  Instead we did it at home before we went and saved ourselves a lot of time waiting in line and money.  (You should have seen that line!)  I painted the girl's faces and Bailey was very proud when Denver asked her to paint his face.  She did such a great job!

I love the paper bag hats the kids made.  Denver's totally looks like the Mad Hatter's hat in the new Alice in Wonderland!  This festival inspired me so much and especially made me want to craft and create more with the kids.  Happy creating!

American Idol

Who's ready for a little AI tonight?!  Who do you think will win?  I'm 95% sure it's going to Lauren Alaina tonight, but since my favorites are gone (James and Casey) I won't be dissapointed either way.  They're both country and both amazingly talented.  I made a batch of these American Idol cookies for tonight while we watch with some friends.

Happy American Idol Finals!

Will you go to prom with me?

Once upon a time there was a boy named Logan.  Prom was coming up and he had a special girl in mind to ask.  He wanted a special way to ask her.  He thought an assortment of cookies would be the way to ask and she, in turn, could answer in cookie.

Logan went out and searched for the best cookie-maker in all the land (*okay, so I made that part of the story up) and had her make the magical cookies.  Later, he and Nicole, fairest in all the land, went out on their first date.  After a delightful dinner, the waitress brought the platter of cookies to their table.

The lovely Nicole searched for the most positively yes cookie in the bunch and chose the "heck yes!" cookie to answer Logan.  And they will be going to prom happily ever after!

Ahhh, the language of cookie is UNIVERSAL and so romantic!

*99.9% of this story is true.

Appreciation

The schools in our district all picked different weeks for Teacher Appreciation Week, so there have been several of them staggered at the schools in the area. Lots of appreciation going on! The lovely Beth had me make these cookies for her son's favorite teachers (4 of them!). I wrote A+ on the tops of their papers. They definitely deserve it. I volunteer for my own kid's classes once a week and it amazes me how TIRED I am at the end of the day. We LOVE our teachers!

In other appreciation news: Mr. John is being featured as a Superstar Husband! AmberLee of Giverslog has a feature called "Give That Man A Hand" and it celebrates men in particular, who give of themselves to the people they love. Sometimes people get down on men and these are such refreshingly positive articles to read. It immediately made me think of Mr. John, so I shared a journal entry I had written about something he did for me that was extraordinary. Go check out Mr. John's story HERE and the rest of the incredibly talented AmberLee's blog.  She is truly a sweetheart!

I've also LOVED reading all the comments and entries for the Jewel Kade giveaway!  I so appreciate all of you who take the time to comment.  Every time I get a comment it makes my day.  I can't wait to see who wins!

So, here's the awesome part for you, dear reader.  Cari, (my awesome Jewel Kade stylist) is giving away this beautiful charm to one lucky winner!

Family Picnic Photo Shoot

Meet my beautiful cousin Hilary.  This is her adorable family.  She decided they were overdue for some family pictures and asked me if I could help them out.  I had a vision of an idyllic picnic under a shady oak tree, so we packed up a picnic basket and a quilt and we all trekked up a hill for a family adventure.

It turned out to be a little more adventurous than we planned as the spiders were there in full force weaving huge webs across the trail.  We simultaneously realized that while this was an idyllic spot
for a picnic, it was also ideal for ticks.  Ewwww!  Gross!

They journeyed on!  Such troopers.  They laid out their quilt and got cozy while I snapped away with my camera.  Suddenly, a mangy cat joined the picnic and thought he would make a great addition to the Wiest family.  He would not take no for an answer and insisted on snuggling with everyone.
It was hilarious... for me at least.

The kids started getting restless as all kids must and I bribed them with some of my chocolate cookies.  The rest of the photo shoot was them yelling "CHOCOLATE COOKIES!"
Which worked out great for me and was super cute.
Thank you Wiest family for going on this more-adventurous-than-planned-for adventure with me
and being such good sports.  You are picture perfect!
(No ticks were harmed in the taking of these photographs)

Mother's Day Cookies

I hope all you moms had a fabulous day yesterday!  I loved opening all my handmade cards and gifts from my kids. So fun!  This was such a super, busy weekend.  Lots of cookie orders, a photo shoot with a gorgeous family, a beautiful 10K run on the beach with friends, and Mother's Day.

I thought I'd share some cookies I made this weekend.  I got a call from a lovely lady named Melanie who saw my cookies at the auction last week and wanted some bright flower cookies for a Mother's Day brunch.  I was inspired by some vintage floral fabrics and decided I would paint a different floral on each cookie.  It was so much fun and I'm so happy with how they came out.

I love handing over my little creations and seeing and hearing people's reaction to them.  I know a cookie is a very temporary canvas, but I am not sad when someone eats it.  It makes me super happy.  I know it's rather cheesy, but it's like that little piece of art just became a part of them.  They literally ingest my art!  How cool is that!?

Lots more cookies to post about and of course some pics from that gorgeous family shoot comin' soon!

Thrifty Thursday

I've been so busy all day I almost forgot to celebrate Thrifty Thursday! Today is a real diamond in the rough. I found this frame in the trash! This is an 18" X 22" open wood frame. I know it's rare to find good stuff in the trash, and I don't tend to look there, but this was right beside a dumpster and I couldn't resist. I have seen really great frames at thrift stores and Ross as well, but FREE? We had an old white board that I just cut to size and stapled that in there.

Happy Hunting!
Off to snuggle with Mr. John!

I love paper!

I love paper!  I have stacks of beautiful papers that I have collected intended for scrapbooking.  Toiles, antiqued florals, trendy stripes, quirky patterns, I love them all.  I have my favorite adhesives and glitters.  My little paperworking toolbox is the cutest thing, with a hammer for setting eyelets and paper piercing needles.  How many scrapbooks do I have completed, you ask?  I have finished a total of 2 pages.  Yep, I rock at scrapbooking.   Avid right?

But, have no fear!  My paper and tools do not collect dust.  I don't allow my complete incompetence in scrapbooking to keep me from using my tools.  I love making cards, banners, and of course these blocks with paper.  This is a set I made this weekend.

I made some baby blocks for a newborn a while back in this post.  Since little Miss Mya is a bit older, I wanted them to be a little sassier.  It's almost the same color scheme but it amazes me how different they came out with a little bolder paper.  Did I mention I love paper?

I've only ever made these blocks for little girls, but it makes me wonder, what about a set with pictures of Mr. John and I spelling out LOVE?  oh!  a family one would be super cute!  I love the endless creative possibilities that all start with wood and paper.
